SUBJECT: ORAL ROBERTS
I have the feeling that Mr. Roberts is considered
marginal by a great many people who are suspicious
of so-called faith healing. I realize that Mr.
Roberts has an enthusiastic following, but I think
that the President's strong friendship with Billy
Graham fully covers this particular base without
risk. To add Mr. Roberts might amount to overkill.

September 15, 1971
TO:

FROM:

Unquestionably, Paul Harvey's visit with the President was
a plus in every way. I think it would be just as helpful for
the President to see Oral Roberts on the same kind of drop-
by basis.
Roberts, long a Pentecostal minister, who traveled much of
the Nation with healing services, converted to the Methodist
Church about two years ago. He is now viewed as much more
moderate than in his early days, but retains heavy conservative
following in much of the country.
This has been helped through his television program, which
has been beamed throughout the country on its own network.
It has a sophisticated mix of entertainment and religion, and
has featured big name stars like Anita Bryant, Norma Zimmer
and Dale Evans.
In addition, Roberts has established a university in Tulsa.
Oriented to conservatism, it has enjoyed phenomenal success.
Roberts can be of great help in our effort to reach the con-
servatives, and I propose we have him in sometime soon.

MEMORANDUM FOR:

FROM:
ALVIN SNYDER AS
SUBJECT:
Oral Roberts' Meeting
with the President
I think a meeting with Oral Roberts would
be an excellent idea. He has a huge following on
radio where he does regularly scheduled sermons
on network hookups. His following is at least as
large as Paul Harvey's and although Mr. Roberts
doesn't have the stature of a Billy Graham, he is
extremely well known and I feel a session with the
President would be a useful one. As we saw with
Paul Harvey these things have a way of paying off.
I think the impact of radio cannot be over-
looked in our overall plan to make maximum use of
the media.

To DAVID PARKER
Recommend a meeting! Roberts'
fundamentalists and his radio program
popular in many areas of South of southment.
His andience is Wallace-type politially
& me can use help. However, it would be
good balance to work in a Jew and Roman
Catholic at some connement time also.

As you can see from the attached memorandum from Dent,
he believes that the President should meet with Oral

from. Alex Butterfield's activities in obtaining a
minister for the recent chruch service. Presumably
you will check Alex and have Dave Parker submit a
