RESEARCH DESIGN
A. Requirements of the Research Design
The primary voter group under study is highly refined and
numerically limited in the population. This places several
extraordinary requirements on the research design which
must be accounted for if the information produced is to
have the high degree of reliability called for by this study.
These requirements are:
1. The middle -American" voter must be identified,
contacted and interviewed so as to be project-
able for the total middle-American population
for the 6 particular states specified.
2. Since middle-Americans sampled in the 6 states
cannot be projected nationally, a national
"norm" for this group is required in order to
know if they are different from middle-Americans
nationwide, so that the meaning of the results
may be correctly interpreted.
3. Since Italo-Americans, Irish-Americans and Polish-
Americans represent even smaller segments within
the "middle-American" voters, areas must be found
where there exist high local concentrations of
each ethnic sub-group so that conventional sampl-
ing methods will yield a high number of qualified
respondents for interviews.
4. Since samples of highly-concentrated ethnic areas
are not projectable beyond those areas, national
norms for the ethnic sub-groups must also be ob-
tained in order to correctly interpret the meaning
of the ethnic data collected in each state.
