DESTRIBUTE BEAN ADMINE MEMORANDUM By mcMwell NARS, Date 1/14/80 E.O. 12065, Section 6-102 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON CONFIDENTIAL July 7, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR: MR. CHAPIN For planning purposes regarding the President's campaigning activities, we should figure that if he does any at all it will be in late October and he would probably go out on one-day swings doing four or five small states in a day. I need immediately a thorough rundown on what Eisenhower did in '54 and '58 and what Johnson did in '66. Also, I guess we ought to have what Kennedy did in '62. This should be quite a complete analysis of the off-year campaign activities of those Presidents. H.R. HALDEMAT HALDEMAN Steve Please take or this project - shall be Completed by noon Themly. Use Hophins. /c MEMORANDUM THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON July 9, 1970 11:45 A.M. 'MEMORANDUM FOR: H. R. HALDEMAN VIA: DWIGHT L. CHAPIN FROM: STEPHEN BULL RE: OFF-YEAR POLITICAL ACTIVITY BY PREVIOUS PRESIDENTS Attached are summaries of off-year political activities for past Presidents for the following years: Tab A - President Eisenhower: 1954 Tab B - President Eisenhower: 1958 Tab C - President Kennedy: 1962 Tab D - President Johnson: 1966 The political activities shown on each summary are for the period August 1 through Election Day of the respective year. The informa- tion was obtained from: (a) Rather incomplete records in existence in the Transportation and Telegraph Office; (b) An inspection of Press Releases on file in the Press Release section; (c) An inspection of the context of speeches printed in the appropriate volume of Public Papers of the Presidents. The events have been listed in a format to designate blocks or groupings of activities. A listing of a number of different cities in one block indicates one single campaign trip from start to finish in which a number of political events took place. The starting point for most of the political trips for all four years was Washington, D.C. However, in the case of President Eisenhower, a few trips originated from the mid-West and, with Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, a few trips terminated in Texas or Hyannisport. - 2 - Political Activity Recap # of Out-of- # of Stops and/or Other President Town Trips Events Activities (Local) Eisenhower '54 6 10 2 Eisenhower '58 2 11 2 Kennedy '62 10 31 0 Johnson 166 3 13 2 PRESIDENT EISENHOWER - 1954 POLITICAL ACTIVITY DATE LOCATION EVENT Aug. 12 Rose Garden Candidates * * Aug. 19 Springfield, Illinois State Fair * Aug. 23 Denver, Colorado Radio and TV address on achievements of 83rd * * Congress.
