THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON May 12, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT Mrs. W.E.B. DuBois apparently wishes to return to the United States to visit, or to die, or whatever (she is now very old). The U. S. Government either is, or is being accused of refusing her a passport (or again whatever it is required to enter the country) on the presumed grounds that she is a communist. I do not doubt. she is. But what possible difference could it make ? Her husband was really a great man who only very late in life became a kind of bitter Stalinist. This year I per- suaded the M. I. T. Press to reissue a long forgotten book of his, and I wrote a short introduction for it.
