Potential Problems - School Desegregation
1. Alabama
a.
Remains essentially the same as before, although
George Wallace is now scheduled to speak in Pritchard
County (Mobile) on Labor Day, which is the day before
the opening of the schools.
b. Jefferson County
Continues volatile but under control. Sheriff and
police chief have requested Federal assistance (for
surveilance only) for school openings on Monday.
2. Arkansas
Continues to remain quiet.
3. Florida
No new developments.
4. Georgia
Randolph County. This school had discontinued all extra-
curricular activities in violation of the court ordered
plan. The judge called the school board in yesterday and
the board agreed to begin basketabll practice and a few
other activities. Everyone seems to be relatively happy
and the system is back on track.
5. Louisiana
No new developments.
6. Mississippi
Nothing new.
7. North Carolina
Charlotte. Has now extended school opening date to
September 8 and currently intends to open all schools
pursuant to the court ordered plan. Three suspects
have apparently been arrested by local authorities
in connection with school vandalism.
