BUREAU OF
December 3, 1970
BY LIAISON
The President
The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President:
The remarks made this morning by Miss Debra
Sweet during the presentation of the Young American Medal
Awards were most unfortunate and uncalled for.
A total of 48 nominations were made by the
state governors for these awards during 1968. It was not
my recommendation that Miss Sweet be included among the
award winners. However, I was outvoted by the Selection
Committee with respect to Miss Sweet's nomination. The
other two members of the Committee were Solicitor General
Erwin N. Griswold and Mr. Jack C. Landau, former Director
of Public Information, Department of Justice.
Her performance was an inexcusable manifesta-
tion of youthful immaturity and a display of a complete lack
of understanding of the dedicated efforts being made by you
and the Administration on behalf of our Nation's youth.
Sincerely yours,
he Erlihe was out? engage get him out.
