THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
dig.
RECOMMENDED TELEPHONE CALL
TO:
Admiral John S. McCain/II
RECOMMENDED BY: Mike Schrauth
PURPOSE:
Express your happiness that Admiral McCain's
son, Lt. Commander John S. McCain III, is
returning home after long captivity in North
Vietnam.
BACKGROUND:
Admiral McCain served during almost all of
the first Administration as CINCPAC (from
1968 to September, 1972). During this time
his son was a POW in North Vietnam. The
President attended Admiral McCain's retirement
ceremony at Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii
in September, 1972. Admiral McCain returned
to California in the "Spirit of '76" as a guest
of the President.
TALKING POINTS:
1. I just wanted you to know how happy I was
to see that your son was among the recent
group to return from Hanoi.
2. I appreciate your loyalty and devotion to duty
during those difficult years when you were
in command in the Pacific and your son was
a prisoner of war in North Vietnam.
3. My very best to you and Mrs. McCain and
to your son.
