- 2 - I am told that Azaleas need a great deal of pruning and watering and that you have over a quarter million Azalea plants in this area. So I suppose that the real heroes of this occasion are the gardeners. The Azalea Festival is a festival devoted to beauty, but it is also dedicated to the NATO alliance and to the values for which it so firmly stands. I am reminded of the poet's line (Dryden): "None but the brave deserve the fair. 11 It is the bravery of the NATO countries that has kept the peace and enabled us to enjoy a celebration like this. I suppose the Azalea Queen rules by flower-power. I guess I didn't expect my own daughter to be the nation's number one "flower child." As Tricia's father, I must be modest, but as a fellow head of state, I can say in all honesty that she is the most beautiful Queen I ever saw. #####
