OCR Page 1 of 9TOAST AT INDIAN STATE DINNER
Mr. President, I thank you for your generous and gracious words.
1. It was appropriate that you spoke of peace, of progress
and cooperation.
(1) As you noted, this journey I am now on is
"a journey in quest of peace. "
This afternoon I had the privilege of laying a wreath on the memorial
to a great man of peace -- one of the truly great men of all time and
of all nations.
1. It was a great honor for me to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi
in this, his centennial year -- and in responding to your
remarks, Mr. President, I find myself reflecting on the
lessons-of Gandhi.
(1) Gandhi's life was inspired by truths which know no
boundary of space or time, for they are eternal.
(2) There is a greatness which transcends the ordinary
meaning of that word, a greatness at once mysterious
and self-evident, a greatness beyond the trappings of
power, beyond the opinions of men, a greatness of
the spirit
1. Such a greatness was his.
