[2/5/70] (Huebner) JK February 3, 1970 Suggested Remarks #1 -- Airport Arrival in Indianapolis Governor Whitcomb, Mayor Lugar, Ladies and Gentlemen: It's good to be back in Indiana, "Back Home in Indiana, 11 as the song puts it. As you know, this was my mother's home state and it's a state where I have always felt especially at home. After all, Indiana gave me the largest margin of victory of any state in 1968. I remember well my last visit to Indianapolis a year ago last Sep- tember. A lot of things have changed since then - - including the impres- - sive development of this airport -- but the warmth of your welcome has not changed and neither have my feelings for the people of this city and state. Not too long ago I was honored to have the Philadelphia Orchestra play "Hail to the Chief" for me. And I am just as honored to have the champion Ben Davis High School Band play it for me today. To that band - - and the four other fine high school bands out here - - I say thank you. Indianapolis, of course, is famous for many things. There is one rather remarkable fact about this city that may not be so well known - - a fact that Vice President Agnew wants me to point out. Indianapolis has given the nation four Vice Presidents: Colfax, Fairbanks, Marshall and Hendricks. Now I'll grant that these names are not exactly household words - - perhaps not even in Indianapolis. But back in those days there were no television networks to make a Vice President famous.
