Suggested Remarks -- International Federation
of Newspaper Publishers
Note: The International Federation of Newspaper Publishers is holding its
Congress in Washington from today through Friday. The Vice President
spoke to the delegates this morning and described them as "the leaders of
the Free World's free press. 11 They are here as guests of the American
Newspaper Publishers Association.
Welcome to this city and to this house. In my 17 months in office, I
have greeted heads of state, diplomats, and legislators from many
countries. It is a particular pleasure today to greet distinguished inter-
national representatives from what Americans call "the fourth branch of
government" - the press.
The newspapers you represent take many different positions on the
issues. Sometimes you disagree with me on important world problems
and sometimes you support me. This diversity of views is one of the
strengths of the free world something we should value and encourage.
For as a noted American journalist, Walter Lippmann, has said: "Where
all think alike, no one thinks very much. 11
Someone (Arthur Miller) once said that "a good newspaper
is a
nation talking to itself. 11 And SO it is your newspapers help both to
