ADDITIONAL LINES FOR SPAIN
The Mediterranean Sea -- the area I have visited on this trip -
got its name from the fact that it was "the middle of the earth". And
I understand that on the maps of three and four and five centuries ago,
Spain was exactly in the center because it was the center of the known
world.
Today, the Mediterranean area is again a center of world
attention as men work to build a lasting peace. And Spain is still
a central focal point in that great drama.
If we are going to avoid war, we must work to prevent war.
If we are going to keep peace, we must learn to build peace.
It was a man from Spain, Balboa, who discovered a new ocean
and named it the Pacific, the peaceful ocean. Today, the people of
Spain are helping to make the oceanic area I have visited on this
trip -- the Mediterranean area -- an area of lasting peace.
Both of our nations are proud of our rich traditions. And both
our nations know that a proud inheritance brings with it a great
responsibility.
