Suggested Remarks -- Arrival
at Andrews A.F.B.
We have talked about important principles on this
trip. about freedom and friendship, integrity and
independence, progress and partnership, strength and
security.
As I return from abroad, this is my message to
you. If we want to encourage the primacy of these values
in the international arena, we must also build them
up at home.
President Eisenhower put it this way in his
Inaugural Address:
"Whatever America hopes to bring to pass in this
world must first come to pass in the heart of America."
Woodrow Wilson once said, "I hope we shall never
forget that we created this nation, not to serve our-
selves, but to serve mankind." (Note similarity to
Jefferson quote: "We act not for ourselves but for all
mankind. ")
Americans know that the best way to serve our
national interest, is to meet our international obligations.
Many years ago a great American General, George Marshall,
made this comment; "We are a strong nation," he said,
