Mr. Chancellor:
I want to express our appreciation to you for the elegant luncheon
and the rich hospitality which has been extended to us here in Salzburg.
Gathering here in the shadows of Mozart, Beethoven, and other
great masters of the arts, we realize that Austria is more a pilgrimage
than a stopping point on our trip to the Soviet Union.
Peace, too, is an art. Like great music, it too requires practice.
If we are to master the fundamentals of human nature -- and the five- -
fingered exercises of international diplomacy we must practice
with patience and diligence. As you have written, Sir: "It is not only
the grand design that matters; the little steps on the path of progress
count also. 11
We share, Mr. Chancellor, a dedication to achieving a lasting
peace. When our party leaves tomorrow, we shall happily carry with
us the belief that Austria shall continue to serve the cause of goodwill
among men.
Let us lift our glasses, then, to the Chancellor of Austria, to
the friendship which joins our peoples, and to our common goal of
lasting peace.
