THE WHITE HOUSE THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN WASHINGTON SPONTANEOUS DROP BY AT 12TH ANNUAL ITALIAN FALL FESTIVAL Sunday, September 17, 1972 2:30 P.M. Villa Rosa Home Mitchellville, Maryland THE PRESIDENT: BACKGROUND The 12th Annual Italian Fall Festival at Villa Rosa Home in Mitchellville, Maryland, is an event to raise funds for the Holy Rosary Church of Washington, D.C., and for the Villa Rosa Rest Home itself. This annual event is held on the grounds of the rest home and in past years has drawn over 10, 000 people. The composition of the attendees is largely Italian-American from the Washington-Baltimore areas and represents all ages. Predom- inantly entire families will attend. The VIPs expected are Secretary Volpe, Cardinal O'Boyle, two or three Catholic Bishops, and Prine George's County Commissioner William Gullet. The format is that of a picnic with exhibits, carnival games, and booths where Italian food is sold. There will be some bands playing and such participation events as pole climbing. Through John Scali, you were invited to attend this event. You regretted but Tricia accepted in your place and arrangements have been made for Tricia to attend and give brief remarks. Unknown to everyone is the fact that you will substitute for Tricia at the last minute, arriving at 3:00 p.m., the time when they expect Tricia and when the attendance has reached its peak of an estimated 10,000. It is envisioned that your participation will be similar to that of the Wilkes-Barre drop by that was so successful last week. Everything will be loosely structured, leaving all options for you to meet with the attendees. Since arrangements had been made for Tricia to speak, facilities will be available should you wish to make some remarks to the crowd. However, there is absolutely no obligation for you to say anything.
