-3- Actually, in all seriousness, the post of Chairman is perhaps more important today than ever before. The 1972 election was the first step in what can become a dramatic realignment of the American political system -- SO long as we have the right leader- ship and organization. After generations as a minority party, the Republican Party is now facing a great opportunity. It can become the majority voice of the American people. The work has already begun. We have achieved our goal at the executive level. Now we must build on that foundation. We must transform a temporary victory into a long-term ascendancy at every level of every branch of American government. We have the ideas, the issues and the morale to do it. Your job, our job, is to take these raw materials and forge them into a strong and durable majority standing during the next four years. And in this vital mission, the Republican National Committee will have to lead the way. Remember, the Inaugural ceremonies we have just celebrated together do not simply mark the victory that we have already com- pleted. They also mark the new challenge we have undertaken
