With the progress we have made, it is my hope Syria and the
United States will move together to new understandings which I
am sure will be beneficial to both our countries, and to all the people
of the Middle East. Such an era, with its promise of a permanent and
just peace in the Middle East, could not have happened without good
will, good faith, and a spirit of reconciliation on both sides. These
traits will be valuable in the days ahead, as you continue your
each
negotiations for a lasting peace. I welcome this opportunity to
in
emphasize once again the commitment of the United States to
pursuing such a peace and I want to assure you, Mr. President,
that the United States is aware there can be no lasting peace in the
Middle East without consideration of the legitimate interests of the
Palestinian people. In working towards such a permanent peace,
we will spare no effort, and we will work with you and the other
participants in whatever ways can enable us to reach that final
destination.
