NBC and CBS noted the 100th session at Paris again turned up a "no
progress" report.
POWs
CBS had follow-up to its Wed. nite POW film. Footage of wife and kids
of the black POW who looked so downcast in film. Wife said he did sound sad
but his voice was normal. Kid chimed in, "we'll have celebration when Daddy
comes home. 11 Asked if she'd like anything different done to secure POW
release, Mrs. McDaniel said she'd like to see RN set a definite timetable for
complete withdrawal. She's tired of raids, etc. We can't get POWs back
until complete withdrawal. She has hopes -- and doubts. It's their 10th
wedding anniversary, noted Cronkite as he closed.
MIDEAST
ABC noted Arafat has flown to Cairo to clarify the guerrilla situation to
the heads of several regular Arab governments. ABC also noted there are
reports of fighting in Jordan but indicated it may only be sporadic firing
across the border.
ABC's John Rolfson had an excellent report on the American Ambassador
in Jordan who says he refuses to be kidnapped without a fight. The situation
in Jordan is so bad that the Embassy is only lightly staffed and the Ambassador
is guarded by 25 Jordanian troops. Taking no chances the envoy also carries
his own weapon. Brown on film recounted the guerrillas past terrorist acts
and hopes to deter any attacks. If he is attacked he said he would "make noise."
Reporter Rolfson, however said the Arab "is a very good shot and if necessary
he would make more than noise. 11
