reserves are committed. Also NBC note of Westy's prediction of heavy
NVA casualties
B52s bombed NVN troop and supply buildups along
SVN's western border in the heaviest raids there in 4 months.
Time says the critical NVN-VC reaction to RN's plan "made it
doubly clear that Vietnamization must work' if RN's hopes are to
succeed. But on the battlefield the results aren't conclusive. ARVN
forces have replaced the US over almost the entire country but they've
yet to be tested. Despite epidemics of draft dodging and desertion,
ARVN morale is up tho a few setbacks or suspicion of a US sell-out
could destroy the new mood. Poor leadership remains ARVN's
perennial soft spot.
Life's lead article: "With pride but no passion, navy pilots fight on
They take casualties, lose comrades as POWs and wonder -- many of
them whether what they are doing is worth it. 11 The pilot featured in
the story says most want out and quickly. And feels the Communists
will take over SVN eventually. To all the pilots, the overriding concern
is to get the POWs back.
The Committee of Liaison has a packet of 451
letters from POWs in NVN.
