ADMINISTRATION
Ray Conniff says RN was "very gracious" in a Sunday call assuring
the bandleader that RN wasn't upset over the protest Friday. "It was
pretty wonderful" of RN to call, says Conniff, who noted that for many
years he'd minimize his own problems by considering those facing the
President
Newsweek with note of the unusual - for the WH audience
clamor and the unusual provocation at the Wallace dinner. RN was
unruffled; Mrs. Mitchell's reaction "unrestrained. 11
In one of its lead
American notes another is on the calmer campus -- Time has a photo
of RN with the Wallaces as it finds the Digest to have been very successful
promoting its sanguine belief that man can manage his destiny. "Brevity,
of course, is the mag's other asset. 11
A UPI dispatch leads: ''RN appointed two physicians to his cancer
panel and directed them to make the drive to conquer the man-killing
disease a worldwide effort.

The panelists expressed some optimism
for finding improved ways to treat cancer, but noted that a cure can't
be expected tomorrow. They also called for strengthening anti-cigarette
efforts.
Stewart Alsop, in the cover story of Atlantic looks at 'Nixon and the
Square Majority. 11 He identifies this majority and traces treads of RN's
character, which are central to his conduct of the office, and to his
appeal to this group of Americans. Among these characteristics are
RN's instinct to strike back, his lack of ideology, his deep desire to
win, his Black Irish nature, his patriotism and his equally genuine
love of football. While the President is a poor politician, in the sense
in which Americans come to know their politicians as extroverts - RN
is the essence of the "preacher politician" and this trait, too, is normally
evident.
While RN's lack of ideology and desire to win have helped him to
"finesse' the Democrats out of one issue after another, Alsop wonders
aloud how RN will react, when the pressure is on, and a crisis appears
if a crisis should come up before November 1972. After that RN would
have no worry about winning again, and Alsop would trust his reactions.
But he is unsure, if a crisis should arise, with RN in deep danger of
re-election.
