RN telephoned Ribicoff to re-enlist support for FAP, saying he stood
ready to "sit down and discuss the situation and not let it get bogged down
in Committee. 11 Ziegler said RN was "not at that point¹ of agreeing to
place the proposal on a pilot base operation nor is the Comm. RN
also phoned Long and Bennett "to make sure that the Committee under-
stood that he did support welfare reform.

"Fighting to keep his plan alive, RN, telephoned Ribicoff offering to
"seek a common ground and work out a strategy" to get the measure
passed.
The AFL-CIO's Biemiller said labor sufferd a painful setback when
Ribicoff backed away from FAP but it couldn't support his new position.
And Biemiller denounced Long's proposal as "wage slavery. 11

change in values that is reshaping US society, putting new emphasis on a
simpler life and plainer talk. 11
