Time has a 2-page review on the increasing controversy over grand
jury use. "Even such sober observers as Harvard law prof Vorenberg
profess to see today's grand juries as equivalent to the Hill committees
of the McCarthy '50s. Unless there is reform, 11 says Time, such
criticisms are likely to grow louder. 11
Hoover says in the FBI Bulletin that judges must deal "promptly
and decisively" with courtroom disruptions or the judiciary will lose
the faith of the public. Hoover said "public agitations" and "blatant
outcries" against a judge who takes firm action are equally disturbing.
POLITICS
National Observer's Edwin Roberts writes a sharp blast at Dems
as he defends RN while acknowledging that R.N may be boring -- after
all he hasn't got us in any new wars nor played nuclear chicken with
Moscow. And he has quieted down campus and racial unrest while
also trying to contain inflation rather than fuel it. As for the exciting
Dems whose past leaders presided over the start of 4 wars in this
century, Muskie seems the best "in a startlingly mediocre field. 11
Roberts says Lindsay apparently believes that "nothing succeeds like
failure [and thus] he is anxious to bring his special talents to all
Americans. 11 Overall the Dem contenders show the noise and promises
long associated with their party but "whoever they choose will be up
against an incumbent with a good record of dealing with problems in-
herited" from the Dems. "RN has displayed both initiative and
moderation during his 1st term, and if that's boring, a lot of
Americans will be content to find their thrills outside the area of
public policy. 11
Muskie said in Fla. that "we must bring relief and reform to our
property tax system. 11 He proposed a $1 B program of direct federal
aid to the elderly.
Muskie, focusing also on POWs in Fla., wore
a bracelet for a while with a POW's name on it; Mrs. Muskie will wear
one til the men are home -- the POW she is remembering was captured
on her birthday.
It's 2-5 that Muskie will get the nod, says Jimmy the Greek. And
a Time survey agrees. Even if Wallace beats him in Fla., Muskie's in
good shape. He'd get 60% -- now of Eastern Dems. In New England,
he'll get almost all the delegates. 55% is expected in NH. He may get
all in Mass. In the South Muskie is hurting -- only in Va., NC and SC
does he look good. Midwest Dems look good for Muskie tho Iowa was
a setback and he could be hurt in the big cities. And he should get a
plurality of delegates in the West.
