The head of Md's 25, 000 classified employees said Wurf's
endorsement may hurt Muskie in Md. It gave Edward Jones "second
thoughts. 11 New Republic notes 2 of Muskie's "under-30" delegates
on the Ohio slate are Frank Dole's son and the 19-year-old mayor
of Newcomerstown who had indicated moderate-to-conservative
leanings in various media interviews.
Sen. McGovern said he would resign if he couldn't end the VN
war within a few days of being elected and challenged Muskie to debate
in NH.
George also called for "a greatly expanded national program
[to] alleviate oppressive property tax burdens.' "
HHH received endorsement from Mayor Cervantes of St. Louis
and mayor-elect Berry of Cincinnati.
ABC/CBS noted that Lindsay will seek del egates in Kans. Va.
Colo., Okla., and Wash. in view of his strong Ariz. showing. It was
surprising, conceded Sevareid, and the Arizona results certainly
increased the number of young, women (40%) and Spanish-speaking
in that delegation. It was a P r boost for Lindsay and hurt McGovern
more than Muskie tho the latter did make tactical errors and was
outpolled by the left-liberals by 6% But no national pattern here,
cautioned Sevareid; wait for the bigger primaries. After all only
15% of Dems voted.
ABC film with Lindsay at 6 a. m. in cold Wisc. where he was
obviously showing pleasure over Ariz. Called least effective in
speeches and best in informal setups, some like a farm visit, arranged
solely for cameras. Still, in rural Wisc, he talks about problems of
big cities. Clip of JVL criticizing RN and AG for not standing up to
gun lobby and preventing hand guns to be SO prevalent. He referred
to deaths of NYC cops from handguns. But reporter found JVL
weaker than elsewhere as of now he'd be No. 4 in Wisc.
Lindsay called his 168 support of VP Agnew a "boo-boo"
US News notes some NY politicians feel JVL is aiming for Javit's
seat in '75.
Perry in Fla. with Lindsay found 2 superb politicos in Evers
and Askew but the National Observer's political writer found JVL
to be struggling for a style and theme. Hard talk is promised, but
