N. IRELAND
All nets led with mounting tensions in N. Ireland,
with film showing barricades of commandeered
vehicles being used to block off Catholic commu-
nities, bombings and demonstrations at the
British Embassy and Amb. residence in Dublin,
sniper fire and an encounter across the border.
Thousands on strike. The first British soldier
in revenge for Sunday's violence was killed.
IRA has promised a total of 26. All noted the
crisis is far from over. The funeral for Sunday's
13 victims will be Wed. and thousands are expect-
ed to attend from the Irish Republic.
All nets noted that Britain's top judge, tough law-
and-order man Lord Widnery will investigate
the situation, but the Irish feel no Englishman
can give an impartial hearing.
A Catholic doctor at the post mortem said mos t
of the 13 killed Sunday were shot in the back.
But the British Gov't said the Army had conducted
itself "with great skill and great restraint. 11
Irish Republic's foreign minister said it "may
have to move to get English troops out of N.
Ireland"
State said the US is obviously
concerned and saddened by the events but cannot
play a direct role. The situation is very complex,
a very tangled problem and it's better to leave
the solution to involved countries.
Mayor Daley termed the British occupation in
N. Ireland a "sham, 11 and referred to British as
"storm troopers. " He sent $25,000 from the
Daley Irish Relief fund to aid families of the dead
and wounded
Ribicoff said Britain "should be
condemned" for its actions and the "time has come
for people to speak out on problems not just in
their own back yard. 11
