Jaffe announced a drug will cancel the effects heroin has
on brain cells.
CBS/NBC noted newsman Peter Bridge to be released from jail
after serving 21 days for refusing to answer grand jury question.
POLITICS
UPI leads: "McG contends RN could just as easily have ended
the VN war 4 years ago, but RN argues there's never been more
progress toward real peace

TRB says the mood in Wash. now can be described in 3 themes:
1) a feeling RN is rolling toward a landslide; 2) a feeling that
seeps out of the WH - a feeling of persecution, despite the expected
victory, by press, intellectuals, opinion leaders etc. ; 3) a gathering
feeling of concern as the details of Watergate, sabotage etc. leak
out. TRB says RN will face continuing embarrassment on Watergate
after Nov. and it could tarnish the luster of a 2nd term.
Roche says the mood of the press corps is one of the most interesting
aspects of the campaign. "Not since Ike occupied the WH have I sensed
such a feeling of surliness" on their part. Ike didn't care what the pundits
thought; JFK conned and cultivated the press and 'played the intellectuals
Note
like salmon"; LBJ took intellectuals and commentators seriously
and perhaps "far too seriously. 11 But, says Roche, RN has ended the
pageantry of the press as House of Lords. 11 He's committed the
unforgiveable sin -- simply ignoring them. With the campaign going
so well, even the election hasn't forced RN to pay them attention.
Thus, "depression is rampant" among the corps. And the rumor is that
if e-elected, RN will hold an annual press conf. on the model of de Gaulle.
"A number of leading Wash. correspondents are allegedly applying for
Z-He-1! combat duty in Belfast, Israel, and even Uganda, 11 says Roche.
