De Toledano writes that some wonder how the GOP could have
indulged in its nefarious activities. But beyond the bugging, no
one knows they did; besides, turn back to what the Dems did when they
had the WH. When the spy planted by LBJ's campaign was found
in Goldwater's entourage, the press treated it as "fun. 11 When
Jenkins was arrested, Fortas and Clifford almost succeeded in
getting press to suppress the story. Re: the '64 GOP Truth
Squad, de Toledano says, Sen. Curtis' briefcase, full of confidential
papers was stolen; phones were tapped and stories leaked to the
press; physical attacks were made on squad members; a Dem agent,
covered w/Goldwater buttons, attempted to start a riot at a HHH
rally; airports were shut down w/WH muscle to prevent the squad
from being on hand when LBJ spoke so they could rebut his remarks.
This was deliberate sabotage, he says, but who protested? It was
considered part of the political wars, and is Watergate etc, any
different? asks Ralph.
An Okla. wheat farmer will file a $150M damage suit charging
5 grain firms and a former USDA official w/conspiracy in the SU
grain sale.
FOCUS ON MCG
Asked about an earlier statement that a settlement would hurt
RN politically. McG denied he had said that. "It might even
help him politically, 11 said McG. But he added that "It'd be a
very foolish voter who voted for RN in preference to McG because
of the war. 11 He felt that "if voters make their judgements on the
basis of the war issue, it" S going to help me more than RN. 11
AP leads: "McG said that instead of planting questions for him
w/TV interviewers, RN should 'consider a less surreptitious route --
like asking them himself, in a face-to-face debate w/me'. 11 He called
the questions given to Issues and Face "one of the more arrogant episodes
in a GOP campaign marked more by its audacity than its honesty. 11
UPI leads: "McG said RN 'has taken sanctuary in the WH' for fear
"he may be asked to account for the incredible activities that've been
carried on hin his name'. " He added: "RN might be asked whether
it's really possible that a massive effort to sabotage the electoral
process could be undertaken without his knowledge or approval.
If RN wasn't involved in all of this, he's apparently one of the few
people in the WH who wasn't. 11
