Thomas leads from M'Kee: "McG said he'd applaud settlement
of the war before the election - - and 'damn' the political consequences.
He also insisted 'the time has come to make it clear to Thieu that
if he wants to carry on the war -- that's his option, but he's going
to have to do it without any US blood and any US dollars. " Thomas
says "McG was feeling vindicated that VN war has popped up again
on the front pages and is again standing out as the 'number one issue'. 11
UPI's feature on Calif. begins: "2 well-drilled armies of
100, 000 volunteers each are being marshalled by RN and McG to
march Californians to the polls. This amounts to 1 worker for every
50 potential voter and probably represents the biggest get-out-the-vote effort
in Calif. history. 11 UPI says "both sides agree RN leads, but McG
strategists, while less emphatic than a month ago, insist their man can
win back enough disenchanted dems to carry RN's home state. "
AP's Gulick says "Thieu's tough-sounding speech and cautious
words from the WH are sending out a similar signal about prospects
for a halt to the fighting. It is: headway has been made in secret
negotiations but more is needed before there can be a firm deal to
end the war; Peace could come soon, but it is not right around the
corner. 11
B52s resumed their bombing of NVN. In the South, about 20
Soviet-made rockets crashed into Da Nang Air Base area killing 3,
including 1 American.
A Navy bomber lost a wheel on landing
and careened across the deck of the Midway, slamming into parked
planes. 4 were killed, 22 injured and one missing.
In a quite positive feature on what Chiang has accomplished
on Taiwan, UPI says he "marks his 85th birthday next Tues.
sitting in the wings of world history. The stage lights have dimmed
for one of the central political figures in the 20th century. He
missed the curtain call Oct. 10 when he failed to appear before his
countrymen on their national day for the first time in 23 years. 11
He is reportedly still recovering from pneumonia and also has
Parkinson's Disease. Rumors he has lost his power of speech are not
said to be not true.
Former Rep. Edwin Willis, who launched an investigation of the Klan
as chairman of HUAC, died at 68.
