    "ocrText": "15\nAltho Connally admitted he \"might well\" change parties, he said he\nwould do so not because of personal ambitions, but because of his\nbeliefs, what he feels US stands for, and the future hopes for US.\nJBC also noted State is \"another recurring rumor, 11 but he doesn't\nanticipate offer and hopes one isn't extended since he wishes to\ncontinue in law practice.\nJBC said R.N feels energy crisis is far worse than people realize and\npredicted RN would be paying a lot of attention to it. RN has some ideas,\nhe continued, acknowledging Mideast stability is part of it. When\nMonroe noted media has been criticized for role in war coverage and\nR.N even \"chided\" it, JBC said part of media failed to be objective, but\nthat was only natural. Pics of enemy activity were unavailable, while\npress was given full run of US side which led to distortions. He praised\nRN's courage, adding R.N felt the actions he took would bring NVN to\nthe table. JBC concurred, adding like LBJ, RN suffered enormous\ncriticism. He sees great prospects for long-range peace. Discussing\nbudget cutbacks, JBC noted it was difficult to get rid of anything in\na democracy but he applauded RN's courage in doing what he thinks\nis right. JBC said RN wants cutbacks, not because programs aren't\nhis, but because they aren't doing the job.\nMeans reports when a Georgetown GOP hostess asked her 8 guests\nabout their 176 choice, 5 voted for JBC, 1 each for Taft, Brock and\nPercy. \"Interesting\" to Means because guests were relatively\nconservative past and present Admin officials, plus a GOP MC.\nNow that one of the \"most powerful influences restraining\" JBC\nfrom jumping parties LBJ is gone, friends believe JBC will\nsoon become either a GOP or Dem-Ind., she adds. She also says\nJBC and Strauss are no longer confidantes; JBC was \"furious\" when\nStrauss said the Dems couldn't nominate a man who hadn't supported\nMcG, even tho Strauss later modified his remarks. But JBC was not\nplacated, viewed the comment as insult, and pushed him closer to\nGOP.
