NEWS SUMMARY February 21, 1973 (Tuesday nets, wires) The major stories of the day: RLG-Pathet Lao initial truce, w/ceasefire scheduled for Wed. midnight was NBC/CBS lead (#3 ABC). ABC/ NBC noted it followed "imperfect" (ABC) agreement leading to ceasefire "more or less" (NBC) in VN. ABC/NBC added Cambodian parties were working on agreement, but Reasoner said no one was optimistic. Cronkite, tho, said "Indochina seems to be on verge of negotiated peace" All nets noted 18 POWs left Clark for US, w/Reasoner adding 100 of remaining 430 POWs are scheduled for release next week. CBS noted all but 1 of 163 Am. POWs were back in US, w/1 remaining at Clark w/malaria. RN's "special journey to talk of peace" (NBC) was #2 report on NBC/CBS, #5 on ABC, as all nets w/excellent film as RN "rode triumphantly" to SC Capitol amid "admiring, cheering" crowd (ABC) and received warm welcome from solons. All nets noted visit was to thank SC legislature for its support of VN objectives, its being 1st to endorse peace plan. Nets also noted WH requested invitation for RN to speak, w/ABC adding request was approved as RN flew to SC. W/film of RN reading letter from mother of KIA, ABC said "daily" RN has been keeping theme of peace w/honor before people. Similar film on CBS. NBC said RN felt it was necessary to explain why war wasn't ended years ago, as it concentrated on remarks about POWs. ABC led, NBC/CBS noted, Butz "unofficially" said food prices rose 2-3% in Jan. but cautioned against newsmen sensationalizing figure to predict year's total and scaring people. HK Smith said Butz winced at a blow that hasn't yet been struck, noting official stix will be released shortly. ABC/NBC noted Fed's Burns suggested public have one meatless day per week and eat cheese, altho, noted ABC, price of cheese rose 9% in Dec. All nets noted GNP rose 8% in 4th Q, 172 a little less than expected but at a healthy level for business expansion.
