The major stories of the day:

All nets led w/the food price picture as CLC "looked into the
future and found bad news. 11 (ABC). All nets noted, NBC led
w/"half in jest" suggestion by CLC's McLane that we all eat
a little bit less. ABC said it learned Gov't is considering
"limited" food price freeze possibly in mid-April and NBC's
Levine termed "most significant" development that CLC
is no longer saying it will "never" impose freeze, but saying not now
but perhaps in future. CBS said Admin had "more advice" on
how to combat rising food costs -- Mudd said we've been told
to eat fish, cheese, boycott meat, eat less, and "if that isn't
enough" a reminder that prices are higher in Japan, Italy,
Germany and France. CLC tried to be helpful, Mudd said, but
they did not succeed. A rough night.
All nets had film reports on Gray's return to hearings. Chancellor
said WH-Hill were "back at it again" over Gray noting "fundamental
difference" in his testimony -- as ABC put it, his "major disclosure
was he won't be disclosing much" under orders by Kleindienst and
"apparently RN! On ABC/NBC film (CBS note) Bayh said Gray
had been "muzzled. 11 CBS said "it's now obvious to RN" that
Gray's in "bad trouble. 11 Mudd said Rather reports that
"private impression" gained at WH is that "Gray has been
abandoned" and can expect "no help from RN. 11 Tho CBS/NBC
noted WH said it had "absolutely not" given up on nomination both
ABC/NBC noted what Chancellor called Gray's "almost pleading"
for vote 1 way or the other.

All nets had film reports of ITT-Chile hearing before Senate Foreign
Relations. ABC referred to "another high level ITT effort" for
Admin assistance. Chancellor noted it was "back in the news. 11
On ABC/NBC IIT's Merriam tried to explain basis of request for
gov't to put economic pressure on Allende -- "he stole our
property" and ITT wanted pressure exerted to make him pay off
ITT/Anaconda. On NBC, Muskie asked him if he could discount
memo on ways to bring pressure as a statement of ITT-Gov't
collaboration. To much laughter, Merriam replied it would be
