NEWS SUMMARY August 2, 1973 (Wed. nets, wires, papers) The major stories of the day: Reports on HRH's last day of testimony before Ervin comm concentrated on Weicker's questions about 2 WH memos and, said Schorr in lead, challenged HRH on WH tactics against opponents. Only CBS noted memos were part of papers Dean took from WH. On all nets, HRH on film acknowledged (to laughter from audience) he had written "good" and "great" on memo that predicted there'd by "violent" "obscene" demon- strators at Oct. '71 Charlotte rally for Billy Graham that RN was to attend. But, HRH said, he'd meant it'd be good because public would know about it and see that it was clearly planned HRH also defended Feb., '73 memo from him to Dean, which he said he didn't dictate but took responsibility for, which stressed tie foreign, Communist money tie to demonstrators and demonstrators to McG/Dems. HRH said he thought this was the case and was asking Dean for facts, but Weicker heatedly disputed that contention HK Smith observed this was one of "most abrasive" days of hearings, and HRH was "hard-pressed" to "keep his cool. 11 NBC led w/what it called a "startling development¹ and CBS said was a "last minute surprise" -- Dash-introduced March 172 memo from Colson to HRH which noted JNM had been told of ITT's $400, 000 commitment to GOP conv. before antitrust settle- ?! ment, a fact JNM has denied under oath. (ABC also noted.) Colson had noted if matter was disclosed, it would contradict JNM Z-hoe ash Check and "more importantly, directly involve" RN, reported Stern. Chancellor reported it showed Kleindienst had lied under oath. ABC/CBS w/film of Wilson (NBC noted) as he admitted calling Inouye a "little Jap. 11 Wilson had made the comment earlier when he was asked his feeling about Weicker. He'd responded he "didn't mind" Weicker but had "trouble" w/ the "little Jap. " Wilson denied it was a racial slur but accused Inouye of being unfair to JDE/HRH Inouye on ABC/CBS film said comment must have been caused by the "summer heat. 11
