Major developments:
- - RN's speech was the several minute lead in quite favorable fashion on
the nets easily the biggest story.
- Secy. Rogers and the Japañese met eyeball to eyeball over the trade
situation and apparently neither blinked.
- - Busing continues to be a well-covered story - - with continued problems
in Pontiac though less major than earlier in the week.
Other news receiving extensive film coverage were the formal opening
of the JFK Center and rioting by 1, 000 inmates at Attica prison in up -
state N. Y.
Sevareid had a witty commentary comparing the Bernstein and RN
messages; HKS figures it's a wide open horse race in '72; Brinkley
hopes the warnings of DOD's friends - - Stennis' Comm. will get
it to move on reducing arms i costs.
PRESIDENT'S SPEECH CBS had an excellent report as Dan Rather gave
a very straight narration between clips of RN on
the Hill where he "got generous applause before,
after and even during" his address. The clips
used were appeals to help halt inflation, that
government coercion should never become a way
of life, that this nation will remain a, good and
generous one and (RN's "favorite thing, 11 said
Rather) hard work to remain #1 - - this to a
standing ovation. (All clips were followed by
extended applause. ) Again, a well done, excel-
lent report.
Cronkite noted Jackson and Reuss fear a resur-
gence of inflation after the freeze then to a clip of
Mills saying RN's announcement on ending the
freeze was a "real shocker. 11 Mills hopes the
Admin will burn the midnight oil to get set for
Phase II. There's a danger RN has weakened his
bargaining position. Wilbur also cautioned the
viewers that restraints may have to last a lot
longer than we think.
