Major Stories of Day:
Draft Extension passes in big RN victory -- lead on all nets.
RN Meets with Consumer Spokesmen minus Nader who
applaud freeze generally but want tighter controls and more
equity. Film reports on all nets.
Rumors of Mao's serious illness or death are denied by PRC
spokesmen in Ottawa but there are still fishy things going on
in the Middle Kingdom.
Another corrected report on a prison shooting -- this one on
the already controversial death of Soledad brother George
Jackson "a surprising new finding, 11 said CBS. And as
opposing views continue to come forth from Attica, a minor
rebellion is put down in the New Orleans prison.
The UN opens with opposing demonstrators on the PRC admis-
sion question marching outside.
The US unleashes one of the biggest raids over NVN since halt
to bombing 3 years ago - - and anti-Thieu demonstrations continue.
DEFENSE
All nets led with news that, as Cronkite put it, the
Gov't again has the power to draft. HKS said the
end of the battle came with ease and speed; it was
almost anti-climatic. And Chancellor said the
Senate had moved with swift decisiveness to put the
draft back in business. A painful defeat for the
anti-war senators, said ABC's Clark, and a big
victory for RN. Schumacher of CBS said there
simply was no interest in debating any longer -- in
fact at one point, no one was talking on the floor.
The filibuster ran out of death even before a
chuckling Stennis, with help of EMK, Brooke, Javits
and Southerners, administered the coup de grace.
Stennis on NBC and ABC voicing his strong doubts
over Admin hopes that new pay raises and benefits
