WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW February 14, 1972 The major stories: THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN - Indochina developments have dominated much of the weekend news. Heaviest US raids in nearly 2 years and a much in- creased air role by ARVN. Enemy offensive has not yet begun in full scale tho US troops are put on alert in anticipa- tion of Tet beginning on Tuesday VC -declared cease-fire is temporarily ignored by US as planes continue raids. Some reports that raids will stop Monday morning; others say they 'll continue til RN leaves for PRC The Versailles conference supports VC proposal and harshly criticizes US. Suggestion made that anti-war activists there were pleased by US cancel- lation of peace talks brought the conference more attention. Soviets took some criticism for failing to back Sihanouk, but overall came out on top as Hanoi's number one backer. (Snooky, by the way, has gone to Hanoi til after RN leaves Peking.) The US estimates thats 2/3 of NVN's outside help comes from Moscow. - WH announces small working party for China trip -- leads CBS. Some p. 1 coverage. - A Catholic protest march of 4, 000 defies N. Ireland police and troops but there is no violence. 10, 000 ma rch in Dublin to protest internment. Meanwhile Britain continues to face serious trouble at home with blackout and energy cutback continuing. - CLC's Rumsfeld suggests easing up on imports to lower beef costs. Declines to speculate on possibility of price controls on food. - Time labels Irving "Con man of the year" as it explains the hoax. - Hoffa says RN is best qualified man as of now to be Pres Meany says RN's domestic record is "bad" but he wouldn't want him replaced by someone advocating "surrender" in SVN. The AFL-CIO boss also charges the WH set up the confrontation at the convention last fall.
