In light of the voting machine mess, a "conversation" with HHH
was quite comical. He couldn't hear Vanocur and vice versa. Went
on for several minutes. Hubert smiled, laughed, had mouth open,
talked while reporters talked -- all to no avail. Vanocur, perhaps
seeing NPACT funds diminishing as this breakdown in communications
continued, was more serious in demeanor. In a night when profound
analysis was even more difficult to find than usual, this situation was
a hilite. Finally HHH was back on and, as if straight from Wattenberg,
he opposed pot, amnesty and abortion.
Not much new from Wallace. Gilligan explained his support for
Muskie - a broad-based, umbrella-like appeal which could help avoid
what the Gov. sees party headed for all over again -- a '68 Chicago
affair between the HHH wing and the McGovern wing. Either Dems
unite or they '11 let RN and his friends like Mitchell win again with a
40% plurality. Gilligan stresses Dem need for a "common denominator".
Besides reflecting on whether or not HHH's "stigma" of being
around SO long was going to hurt him this day of apparent desire for
the new and the fresh, Vanocur made much mention of "the Wallace
factor" the situation which complicates everything for Dems and throws
off the predictions. Ind. News reporter and Murray of Sun Times discussed
power of alienation theme in Indiana average guy has had it with union
leader, mayor, gov and Pres. Murray saw especially strong alienation
among young workers who are "totally dissatisfied" with their leaders.
After noting the continually building challenge to Daley and his delegates
by the reformers, NPACT's boys brought on Biossat who had little hopeful
to say for McGovern or HHH. Ind. was smashing victory¹¹ for Hubert
who simply hasn't got any real winning tide going for him. Meanwhile the
"Wallace factor' postpones day of serious decision-making for Dems.
Biossat has "serious doubts 11 for HHH if he doesn't come out well from
Ohio. He's just not showing he has the makings of essential support for
the nod - in many states he has nothing going for him. As for McGovern
Biossat doesn't see how he can simply bypass Mich. if he wants necessary
momentum for Calif.
NET/NPACT show concluded with McGovern clip from still unsettled
Ohio as he told supporters that turnout showed people want to make a real
difference this year. They're sick and tired of phoniness and manipulation;
tired of explanations of VN -- they want war ended.
Jackson will run in no more primaries but says he '11 still be a
candidate in Miami.
In Ala. Wallace won at least 20 of 29 districts.
Sparkman and Blount both apparently avoided runoffs.
