THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
May 17, 1972
(Tues. nets, wires, columns)
George Wallace was the multifaceted dominant story of the
night with 12-18 minutes on the nets featuring: His "remarkable"
recovery; his staff's pledge that he'll campaign in a wheelchair if
necessary; suspect Bremer a not-too-bright loner who apparently
sought identity in a big way and who has been following Wallace for
at least a week; the impact on the campaign on this, Wallace's
biggest day ever in the primaries. (He is headed for 45-55%
victories in both Mich. and Md. with McGovern edging HHH for the
remaining votes.)
In commentaries Brinkley called for an end to campaigning in
crowds, Sevareid noted the psychological similarities -- withdrawn,
failure, a need to assert self in suspect Bremer and other assassins
while Reasoner said "a couple of words" in defense of the nation as he
said hypochondria and masochism weren't the solutions to our problems
and the talk about a so-called "streak" of violence in America isn't
justified. Similarly Pat Gray, in implied reaction to McGovern, said
on ABC he did not "tremble" for America
Mudd said the only
certain thing about political impact of incident is that pressure on
EMK to run will cease.
Wallace has been taken off "critical" list to "serious" and "stabilizing."
He'll need further surgery to remove bullet near his spinal column.
Doctors are generally optimistic but no predictions are being made as
to whether he'll be permanently paralyzed from waist down or not.
ABC film of RN announcing availability of Walter Reed to the Gov.
another indication of Washington's recognition of Wallace's political
strength, said Jarriel. From doctors, staff and family comes word
that the Gov. is a "very vigorous" patient and, said George Jr. , if
any man can overcome "something like this, Daddy can. 11 With
Bayh leading the way on the Hill new pressure for gun control legislation
is building.
Film on all nets as Connally made surprise decision to leave
Cabinet with warm compliments exchanged between RN and the Secy.
who'll be replaced by George Shultz who'll be replaced by Cap Weinberger.
