The major stories of the day:
GOP Convention led all nets w/Platform and Rules sessions
garnering up to 10 minutes on NBC/CBS while ABC had shorter
report of 3 minutes. Rogers on all nets asking if the NVN
"signal" was given in Oct-Nov of '68, why didn't the Dems act
on it? Again, an effective job by the Secy. as he debunked
Shriver's charge. (Smith commentary ripped into Shriver's
praise of Ike's actions in Korea compared to RN; Smith pointed
out Ike's "hard-line" on Korea.
)
Platform seen as 99-44/100%
WH w/controversies shunted to out-of-the-way subcommittee
sessions which poor Cassie Mackin of NBC said were hard to
find or to cover
Emphasis in Rules reports on the drawing
of battlelines for '76.
-- Ramsey Clark was #2 story on all nets w/2 featuring his belief
that McG's election would bring the POWs home and all shows
w/Clark saying POWs would be back if there was a full political
and military settlement. He denied his earlier statement that
bombing halt would be sufficient to win their return. Ramsey's
home movies on 2 shows as he lashed out at the bombing --
"massive, 11 "destructive, " "stupid" and "inhumane beyond des-
cription. 11 4 minutes on one net and over 3 on another.
All nets briefly noted HAK's 16th trip to Paris for private talks.
CBS noted Dow-Jones spurt to its highest level in 4 years was
helped by HAK's mission. On 18. 9M volume, the Dow rose 9.33
to 973.
2 nets w/film of formation of Labor Comm. for McG -- George
briefly on 1 show. The other had Sarge making his 1st campaign
promise: A Dinner for the Poor at McG's 1st WH Dinner. (Really.)
Newsweek full of positive articles on Admin -- on Jewish vote,
economy, Admin females and on HAK. Negative looks at SALT
and VN battles Time also features Jewish vote and US-USSR
trade. McG gets a good ride in all weeklies for the "buoyant,"
"warm" crowds he had in New England but his problems are again
outlined. Still, some improvement, predictably, in the wake of
Shriver whose wife, incidentally, is lead feature in Life
US News features Burger interview and a quite positive look at
economy. Newsweek's cover on female fashions and Time's on
Sex and the Teenager.
