NEWS SUMMARY August 19, 1972 (Friday nets, wires, columns) The major stories of the day: ABC led and CBS noted GOP Platform Preamble which Smith called a "scorching attack" on Dems who've been "seized by a radical clique¹ which "scorns the past and blights the future. 11 Both nets noted GOP call for disaffected Dems and independents to join w/RN. NBC/CBS noted tight security -- a la James Bond at Platform sessions from which Schorr anticipates "a conservative document" and Chancellor a ''hymn to peace and prosperity. 11 NBC also featured GOP women's "struggle against the Establishment" on Rules and day care. In other GOP news, Sevareid had favorable look at GOP chances while Smith, noting the summer of contentment view described by Sidey, warned that the cloud of Watergate had better be cleared up. ABC report on Richardson's remarks focused on his defense of 1701 in incident as Kleindienst canceled out. Lengthy reports on 2 nets on the demonstrators tho only 400 or so are now in Flamingo Park. McG on 2 nets saying his campaign will have to "tighten up communica- - tions 11 and be "more cautious in what UPI calls McG's "curbside com- mentaries. 11 Also on ABC/CBS, McG told how GOP strategy is to have 15 people taking potshots at him while RN pretends he doesn't know an election is going on. "They're shooting at me from all sides, 11 said George. NBC led w/what Chancellor called day's "most important news (not mentioned by ABC): HAK's 6 hours of talks w/Thieu" of such length that it would be unlikely to have no change in position. Rumsfeld on all nets urging Ford to cancel its planned '73 price rise as WH intensified pressure and the CLC man said he hoped Ford would show it does indeed have "a better idea. 11 (This clip on film on all nets NBC assessed Phase 2 results -- farmers, big business doing well; small business w/complaints.
