POLITICAL MEDIA ANALYSIS THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN September 26, 1972 McGovern appears to have taken another shellacking yesterday. There was little in the way of positive news for him anywhere, and his latest remarks have been described by Broder as an "outburst" indicating pressure of polls and coverage is getting to him. For McGovern, there was some good wire on his attacks on our so-called coziness with the "sharks" and "hogs" of Big Business. Also, Harris Poll played up in Philly. On the down side, CBS ran a major piece on Yankelovich, which gave major states results, and showing McGovern camp as refusing to comment. Major wire story indicating McGovern further down in polls than anyone in thirty- five years. Other nets covered the Yankelovich polls, though not as thoroughly as CBS. Beyond that NBC did an in-depth piece on blue-collar area of California, carried by HHH, where RN is carrying 45 of 60 residents polled. Very negative for McGovern. Further, ABC did a piece on a Chicago ward leader, a Daley man, who says McGovern is going to lose because we are "gonna make him lose. " Further, Times survey of Tristate area is pro-RN and Jim Perry (Observer) has secret poll of Democrats in Congress indicating that the Democrats on the Hill may not give McGovern even a majority. Finally, in last news story of day, the McGovern "outburst" he accused nets of being "intimidated" by Nixon-Agnew, to point where they are giving equal time to RN's "second-level bureaucrats" and "lackeys. 11 (Wall Street Journal has another piece on the RN surrogate program.) Further in story, McGovern accused these "lackeys" of doing RN's "dirty work. 11 Cloud on horizon. Hard to gauge, but McGovern did get some coverage denouncing RN for playing politics with POWs, and POWs in one story are said to have urged RN not to interfere with release. HKSmith raps McGovern for his role in the POW release. FOR OUR SIDE -- Both President and Rogers got major network coverage, and press play this morning on their hard news -- the former on the IMF and U.S. proposals, and the latter on the terrorism speech at the UN. The Gleason endorsement was noted on all networks -- some coverage also this morning. Also, as mentioned, the LA blue-collar area analysis, and the Chicago ward-leader -- strong anti-McGovern pieces rebound to our benefit. Veep got good wire pickup on charge that McGovern is naive with his quote about Russians, and we can't have this kind of fellow negotiating for United States. CLOUDS BUILDING -- Note page 29 of news summary. Both Stu Alsop and Dan Schorr building great pressure under EMK to go public with his subcommittee with investigation of Watergate case.
