NBC said Strauss' election ended weeks of "bitter struggle"
between traditional and McGite Dems and when the "dramatic
and tense" day was over, the forces controlling Dems since
convention no longer did. Kiker said the "fix was in" before
the Sat. vote, as all wanted Westwood replaced and she was
willing to resign but not suffer embarrassment of ouster.
Deal was that when regular Dems moved to force Westwood's
resignation, coalition of big states and others would come to
Jean's defense w/understanding she would step aside after vote
of confidence. But Labor and South wanted a purge, said Kiker,
so vote was close, and Jean waited apprehensively as she knew
her defeat on motion would mean her arch-rival Strauss had
votes to win. Strauss probably could have been defeated if libs
had settled on a single compromise candidate, said Kiker, and
Strauss' victory will be seen as successful attempt of regulars
to take party back from McGites. Noting Strauss supporters
say he'll balance party and Strauss promised to work w/all
factions, Kiker concluded the question is if all factions will
now work w/Strauss.
Strauss said the '76 nominee will in all probability have
backed McG and Wallace "certainly has some shortcomings w/respect
to his support" of the '72 ticket. On "Face the Nation, 11 Strauss
disputed claims EMK opposed him, saying "EMK made it perfectly
plain he was taking no interest and I would be acceptable. " Strauss
said that if Dems chose to censure Dems supporting RN, "JBC
belongs at the top of the list, but Strauss predicted Connally would
switch to GOP "after all, he's been w/them for 3 years. 11
Strauss wants 25 seats for blacks on DNC but expressed
opposition to quotas and said some of reforms need to be looked
at. But he strongly urged continued broadening of party.

Patterson continues as Co-Chmn. and a 2nd post was created for a
woman and filled by Mrs. Wilkins of Oregon.
Looking at the DNC situation prior to vote, the Trib's
Squires says it's "as good a subject for a Loomey Tune' or
spot in Disneyland as the great Walt ever had.

are comically fighting an unwinnable war, trying vainly to make
