The major stories of the day:
- - Watergate dominated all nets (9-11 mins.) and led ABC/NBC
(CBS #4). VP on film on all nets delivering what CBS noted was
billed as "important statement, 11 and saying he has "full confi-
dence" in RN's integrity and his determination and ability to
resolve Watergate to public's satisfaction. VP also warned
that "jumping to conclusions" before facts are known can "adversely
affect integrity of criminal investigative processes" and for such
reasons he would say nothing more on Watergate at this time.
Noting pressure on VP to repudiate the matter, Cronkite said
VP "stood firmly" by RN. NBC noted VP termed "inaccurate"
reports he might be ready to break away from WH because of
concern of Watergate's effect on his political future
Brinkley
weighed both sides of what VP could or couldn't have said and
decided VP "said about all he could. 11
All nets emphasized (CBS w/silent film) RZ's announcement that
the daily staff meeting of top aides, chaired by HRH, was "dropped"
(CBS) 2-3 weeks ago. Pierpoint said meeting had become "institu-
tion. 11
All nets also noted RZ said status of WH staff remains
unchanged
HKSmith w/positive comment on Rogers as man to
restore integrity to Admin
Sevareid pointed out how GOPs on
right (Dole) and left (Ripon) were disassociating GOP from Watergate.
-- All nets reported Post story CREP organized telegram "blitz" (CBS)
to WH and also took out fake ad in Times in support of RN's mining
decision, giving what Post called "distorted view¹¹ of public opinion.
NBC's Rollins reported husband of woman listed as coordinator on
Times ad confirmed CREP placed ad and used his wife as "front. 11
Mitchell on CBS film denied authorizing funds for the ad and em-
phasized CREP's financial aspect wasn't his "ballpark. 11 ABC w/
former CREP staffer verifying campaign and Calif. Chrmn Nofziger
