NEWS SUMMARY

(Monday nets, wires. Magazines separate.)
The major stories of the day:
NBC/CBS led w/what Chancellor termed as "concession by
WH" that RN/Dean had met a number of times from Jan-April,
as Post reported, but denied RN/Dean discussed Watergate
coverup or that RN was ever involved in break-in plans or
the coverup. Valeriani said WH denied "implication" of story,
but conceded RN/Dean had met, as NBC/ABC noted WH said
RN had "every reason" to talk to his "resident legal expert"
(ABC). As to release of logs of RN meetings, WH said tha'd
be "constitutionally inappropriate" because of "separation of
powers. 11
All nets w/film as a "surprised" (NBC) Cox
"disagreed" w/WH that logs wouldn't be available, w/Cox
saying he was assured when appointed that he'd have access to
all papers, and he intends to have that access.
Richardson
says it may have to be (WH) settled by courts -- if so, RN would
need his own personal/lawyer.
Dean's visit to EOB to look
at his personal papers noted by ABC/NBC, as was his allega-
tion that WH wouldn't let him make photocopies. Dean's
copying the papers by "long-hand, 11 said NBC's Duke, while
ABC's Landay said Dean was trying to support case w/documentary
evidence.
Senate probers "decisively rejected" (NBC) Cox's request
hearings be postponed for 3 months because he feels they will
impede search for truth and might jeopardize chances of con-
victing those guilty. Led ABC, #2 on NBC and #3 on CBS. Cox
on ABC/NBC asserted 1 of best ways to get info from witnesses
is to hold fear of long prison terms in front of them. But if
fear's removed by pretrial publicity or other unintentional
obstruction, then witnesses might not tell the truth. Graham
of of CBS said Cox's behind-the-scenes appeals had failed, so
he went over solons head to public.
ABC similarly said
Cox had been "tiptoeing" around Hill "sensitivities" but when
no one took his hints, he took issue to public.
Talmadge
was 1st comm member to comment, noted NBC, as all nets
w/film of Talmadge saying it was "presumptuous" of Cox to
