NBC/CBS led (ABC #7) w/WPI stix that ABC called "so
bad WH wasn't even trying to put a good face on them, 11
and which CBS said came as "shock" causing even most
pro-Admin MC's to "wince. 11 For May, prices were up
2%, 2nd highest monthly increase since '51, said Reasoner.
Chancellor noted they were up almost 13% in past year and
Admin-predicted levelling off isn't indicated (also noted
by CBS). NBC said "worst of all" was raw farm products,
up 6% and projected annually at 39%, tho bad weather may
be as much to blame as lack of mandatory controls unions
cite
ABC/NBC noted WH says no action expected this
weekend. ABC had film of RN/JBC on Sequoia, w/
Shoumacher saying RN's "lack of action is troubling
insiders. 11
All nets w/positive film reports on new FBI chief-designate
Kelley who "looks every inch the part, 11 said ABC, calling
him "incorruptible, tough, independent" like Hoover, but
who won't run Bureau as private empire. NBC's Jamieson
said "if he runs FBI as he ran KC police, FBI can only
benefit;" Rather said quick Senate approval is expected.
ABC/NBC noted he's a strong believer in good community
relations, and noted RN/Richardson said they didn't know
his political affiliation, "as if emphasizing he's not a
political appointment, 11 Valeriani said. Both nets had
film from KC emphasizing computerized operation, use
of helicopters, while CBS had up-beat report on Kelley's
build-up of KC police, adding that KC-ers believe he'll
be "strong successor" to Hoover.

deposition in Dem civil suit and Porter's admission to Ervin
comm. of perjury.

ABC led w/"lst details on HRH's side of Watergate, 11 most
important point of which was that Dean was never considered
WH's chief investigator on the subject, but was simply
understood to be man staying "on top of it" (also noted by
CBS). That role is "considerably less authoritative" than
