The major stories of the day:

Variously called "the most explosive, 11 "the most
sensational" testimony so far on "the biggest day
yet, 11 Magruder implicating Mitchell directly in bug
plans and HRH/Mitchell in cover-up was lead story
on all nets w/NBC devoting over 15 minutes to his
remarks. 5-7 minutes on others
ABC's Donaldson
said Magruder tackled the big question at the outset
by saying (on ABC/CBS clip) at no point, to his knowl-
edge, did RN have knowledge of bugging or coverup.
Chancellor said Magruder implicated a number of RN
aides but he repeatedly said RN wasn't involved. But
Schorr said while Jeb helped to resolve the question
how conspiracy came to be from JNM down, what w/WH
being kept constantly informed, his testimony "only
sharpened the question of what happened from JNM
up"
Magruder's recitation of Mitchell approving
$1/4M Liddy project after rejecting more grandiose
plans seen on ABC/NBC film w/NBC clip including
Jeb's revelation of Liddy's "appalling" plan to kidnap
radical leaders during GOP Conv
Magruder relating
Jan. meeting w/HRH at time when Jeb feared he was to
be made a scapegoat and before trial in which he
perjured self covered on NBC w/both ABC/NBC noting
HRH has denied any such meeting and Chancellor adding
that if Magruder is right, HRH is a party to perjury
Magruder told on film on all nets that there was never
any doubt of need for cover-up and that he personally felt
if Mitchell's involvement were revealed, it'd negate RN's
re-election
Concluding film on NBC, and also on
ABC/CBS, was Magruder explaining how frustration
over illegal actions taken by antiwar leaders led WH/CRP
aides to consider illegal actions themselves
CBS had
hour special on Magruder testimony -- first such show of
hearings. And they announced a Sunday special reviewing
Watergate on 1 year anniversary and crisis it's caused
RN's presidency.
