NEWS SUMMARY
June 28, 1973
(Wed. nets, wires)
Major stories of the day:
-- While Watergate
continued to occupy most network
time (9-to-12 mins), RN's veto of appropriation bill w/
amendment to shut-off funds for continued bombing in
Cambodia led ABC/NBC (#4 CBS). ABC said veto set
stage for "most serious" confrontation between WH-Hill,
while NBC called it break-out of "bitter fight" that could
pose "constitutional crisis, " CBS called it a "game of
chicken" and all nets reported from Hill that Mansfield "arose
in wrath" (ABC) saying Senate will attach stop bombing amend-
ments to every available bill. CBS said Hill critics vow they'll
not back down. Chancellor said if Hill and RN persist, US will
be "in for a real crisis. 11
Mudd headlined CBS by saying under strenuous cross-examination,
Dean "wavered a little bit" about when RN 1st knew about cover-
up. By contrast ABC said Dean "didn't back away" from his story
of RN involvement, All nets had clip of Gurney asking Dean how - -
If he didn't discuss w/RN CIA involvement, Magruder's planned
perjury, destruction of documents, or payoffs, at Sept. 15
meeting - - he could say RN knew all about the cover-up based
only on RN saying Bob said you did a good job. Dean said his
mind wasn't a tape recorder but his "impression" was RN knew.
Gurney said there's "not a single shred of evidence" in your
whole "thesis, 11 to which Dean replied he could only testify to the
truth as he knew it. Said Chancellor, Dean admitted there were
a lot of things he didn't tell RN.
Following Gurney questions,
WH counterattack was launched as an unwilling Inouye read parts
of Buzhardt memo on all nets: on CBS, drawing laughter as he
read charge that Dean was a Watergate architect and participant
and "perhaps unwittingly" was the single author of the political
and constitutional crisis derived from Watergate in part because
of his insinuations of WH involvement. On NBC/CBS Dean called
it inconcelvable he could have planned and carried out Watergate
