No WH comment about a story In Boston Globe suggesting how RN
could submit to questioning by Senate Comm w/out conflict w/Con-
stitution. He suggests issue could be avoided if Comm is looked on
as group of individuals rather than a Committee.
#2 NBC story Sat from Wilmette, I11, high-income suburb which went
2-1 for RN in Nov. and 2 months ago had few who had opinions onW ater-
gate. Hearings have changed that, said reporter and it's now 3-1 against
RN. Number of man-on-street interviews reflected declining trust
in RN and his choice of advisers. And several said it'd have changed
their vote -- altho they weren't all sure if they could have voted for
McG. One said he was afraid of McG -- and now he's afraid of RN.
And Chalmers Roberts says his strongly GOP Amherst class of '33
is very dubious of RN's claims of non-involvement.
McG campaign director Hart regrets Dems did not dig deeper
into Watergate during campaign. However, he said after Eagleton
had to be replaced, "we might as well have Hunt up Sur gloves.
Stressing Watergate would have helped, but I doubt if it would've
beat RN. Hart said Dem strategy now is to say as little as possible
about Watergate. "Officially the line is we don't want to profit from
a national tradegy, " he said, "You can translate that as let GOP stew
in their. own juice. 11
An FBI Investigation of "dirty tricks" in Wisc primary apparently
includes a probe into delays of some campaign mailings, Milwaukee
Journal reported.
HHH laughingly debunked idea on Meet the Press
that GOP sabotage, etc hurt Dems very much. Internecine Dem
rivalry and quotas, etc. was what did it - - GOP couldn't approach
damage that caused, he said.
