The major stories of the day:
-- The economy, of which there was "both bad and good news, "
dominated nets w/6-9 mins and led ABC/NBC. Unemployment
in June stood at 4. 8%, 1st time under 5% in 3 years, but, said
Utley, that was the "only good news - - unfortunately most of
it was bad. 11 WPI up 2. 4%, the stix taken before freeze went
into effect the biggest jump in 22 years. Biggest increase
was in farm products, up a record ("whopping" pm ABC) 7%.
ABC/NBC reports on packing houses that've closed because
of freeze,
CBS economic report focused on dollar, which
suffered "another bad day, 11 but doesn't seem to be affecting
tourism in Europe, ABC report found gloom, tho, among
finance officials w/predictions of another crisis.
"It appears the bombing could go" on after Aug. 15, led Mudd,
as let CBS report focused on Schlesinger's 1st news conference.
It's "quite possible" RN "might" ask Hill for extension, said
the DOD Sec'ty. on CBS film (noted by ABC), a.8 he also hoped
for improvement in Cambodian govt and forces.
All nets
noted, in Mudd's word, Cambodian govt suggested both sides
"stop the fighting and talk peace. 11 NBC called it an "important
development" noting govt. says it's ready to negotiate w/rebels,
including Sihanouk.
Nets used previous report as lead into
silent film of RN w/PRC's "top diplomat" (CBS) Huang as they,
along w/HAK, discussed Cambodia at WWH.
HAK on ABC/CBS
film said Admin reserved the right to ask Hill for bombing
extension, and on NBC he hoped all major countries would
use their influence to bring peace in Cambodia.
All nets w/reports on American Airlines' voluntary "confession"
it made illegal $75, 000 contribution to CREP at Kalmbach's
request. Kalmbach, tho, noted all nets, said he had no knowledge
of illegal donation; he'd solicited the board chrmn, on personal
basis.
