UPI notes RN stopped his limousine on a winding mountain road
just before he reached CD to pose for pics and chat w/ 13 Girl Scouts.
The youngsters ran up to him and began jumping up and down, dancing
and clapping their hands.
Free Press Arnett would like RN in hospital another week to assure
total recovery from formidable ailment which holds much relapse
potential. Noting that once out, RN will be "plunged into cauldron, 11
Arnett says RN should take any extra slack he can in this most
difficult year.
WS Journal reports more GOPs are rising to RN's defense w/
Ind. Rep. Dennis declaring there's no evidence RN knew of break-in
in advance, Fannin insisting RN was "in no way involved" in illegal
activity and Hansen asserting "overwhelming majority" in Wyo. support
RN. "Attacks on the Ervin comm grow, 11 it adds, noting Curtis'
call for end to hearings.
Chancellor, over film of the Changing of the Guard said Brinkley's
found "elements of monarchy" in both Britain and US. Brinkley said
US has nothing like that, tho the way it's going, it soon may have.
He noted "Watergate crook" Magruder in BBC interview said working
at WH is "like working in a monarchistic court, removed from, out of
touch w/ realities of life in US. 11 Brinkley noted it's like living inside
a closed, charmed circle, enjoying every luxury taxpayers money
can buy. The full danger of it has never been SO clear til now: not
that WH life is extravagant and expensive, but rather "that the Pres
and his court come to be cuddled and coddled, wrapped in luxury,
protected and surrounded by courtiers and sycophants, electric
fences, and private police forces¹¹ to the point they don't know what's
going on in US. He noted staff won't tell Pres bad news recalling RN
said no one told him about Watergate.
Brinkley noted the trappings of royalty have been at WH since before
RN arrived, but he expanded them and has a taste for them. David
noted in the few European countries that have royal courts, they
don't run the country and are only ornaments. WH isn't and is supposed
to run a country it knows less and less about and doesn't understand, w/
Watergate just 1 of the results.
