K THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY August 23, 1973 (Wed. nets, wires) The major story of the day: 13-16 minutes of RN news conference, later carried in prime time by NBC/CBS/NET. Cox-Wright on all nets w/ note of Sirica's apparent sympathy for Cox and emphasis on historic nature of case Also noted by all nets: HAK for Rogers; CLC expects higher food prices under Ph. 4 but less than would otherwise be case; Gaudet surrenders in New Mex. w/ statement of support for Angela Davis. And HKS rapped the excessive concern over Lucianne Goldberg's "spy" activities. * * * NEWS CONFERENCE Probably no President has ever faced tougher questions, said Cronkite, noting resignation/impeachment raised Stahl of CBS on special called it "an act of courage" to take "very tough, specific" questions in atmosphere RN probably saw as "hostile. ". 11 "Unusually tough" questions, said Utley, w/ W'gate queries coming "hard and fast. " Kiker on live coverage called it "1 of toughest" conferences he's seen and some questions were "rude. 11 They pressed hard, said HK Smith. ... Haynes Johnson of Post of NET special said no Pres. ever faced such "a tone, harshness, accusations. 11 NBC's Valeriani said RN expected tough questions and he gave tough answers. He was clearly in command -- as Valeriani said a Pres. can always be in news conf. format. Cronkite said RN met questions "head-on" for 45-minute" no-holds- barred" session and responded by turns, w/ conciliatory, matter of fact and belligerent answers. Rather said it was in "many ways, a masterful performance" as RN attacked while convincing watchers he was being attacked. RN came across, said Dan, as a fighter and as candid -- and he probably helped himself. Rather expects "nationwide high-marks" for RN because 1) he finally faced questions man-to-man and 2) was overall impressive. Following live coverage HK Smith said RN had done more good for himself than he has in past 5 months Kiker, also after live coverage and on NBC special, said it was an "impressive,"
