Lengthy clips on RN "backing both sides, as Cronkite put it, w/Pres. defending VP's course of action in defending himself and defending Justice Dept. which VP has attacked. RN hope that Austria would "reconsider" closing of refugee camp covered on ABC/CBS clips. All nets noted HAK to PRC Oct. 26, ABC pointing out PRC scooped RN by 30 minutes on that. RN to Japan before end of '74, noted by NBC which also said RN to Europe in 3-4 months. Latter noted also by ABC while CBS said time for trip isn't set yet. CBS only net w/clip of RN saying economy is moving full-bore ahead despite unacceptable inflation. Others noted RN indicated Ph 4 would continue longer than Fellner would like. Rather noted that after no news confs. for more than 5 months, RN has now held 3 in 6 weeks Pierpoint on CBS recounted Providence Journal-Bulletin account of RN's small taxes for '70-'71, noting "very expensive interest" on KB/WWH properties and claim to "sizable credit" for RN's VP papers. NBC noted. -- In "extraordinary legal proceeding" and "highly unusual" open session of court (CBS), Judge Hoffman ordered grand jury to disregard news stories in VP case. He said they' re frequently inaccurate. And he approved request of VP's attys to subpoena and take depositions from those w/any possible knowledge on leaks. #2 story on all nets. One-time VP fundraiser Muth on ABC/NBC clips said he gave no info to jurors which would implicate VP; ABC called him hostile to prosecutors Brinkley said critics of leaks assume juries are unable or unwilling to form verdicts based only on courtroom evidence and, if true, entire legal system doesn't work, tho David said facts on how juries make decisions are few.
